Brutus loves to chew and unfortunately regular chew items like Nylabone, ham or beef bones, as well as rawhide etc. sold in pets stores won’t work for him.  Brutus has food and environmental allergies.  Most of these items are flavored with beef or chicken and both are a no no for him.  This poses a difficult issue for Brutus.  What can we give him that will not trigger an allergic reaction? (I plan to blog about his allergies troubles in the near future, so stay tuned)
We found the solution by accident when Brutus was with me at my office.  I work at a nature center and it is filled with natural items such as bones, etc.  He is very fond of stealing things off of the touch table, especially the deer antlers, jaw bones, etc.
I had been noticing the antlers were showing up at pet stores and more and more sites are dedicated to selling antlers of all types for dogs to chew.  Finally, I let him have one of the antlers. Boy was he happy and so was I because he didn’t seem to have any reaction at all to chewing on it. So every time he came to work he got to chew the antler and 2 weeks later, the antler was gone.

I purchased an Elk bone fit for a 90 pound dog off of Amazon.com.  I am always wary of purchasing products online from companies I have never hear of and with so many competing sites, Amazon was a good place to start.

The bone is made by the company Chasing Our Tails.  I was worried about finding a nice large bone for him that would last a long time and boy did I.  I got the extra large and it is enormous.  Brutus is obsessed and completely satisfied with it.  So far it is worth every penny.  You can find them on Amazon.com, where you can even get it as a subscription and they will mail one out to you on a schedule or go directly to the companies web site.  http://www.chasingourtails.com/elk–elk-splits-rack-snacksreg.html

If your dog loves to chew and you are looking for a good natural alternative, try antlers.  I am pretty darn sure you will not be disappointed and your furry companion will thank you.
