A new food for Brutus!

Today marks the day that we try a new food for Brutus.  As most of you know, Brutus has food allergies and he can only eat a few types of protein.  After a long food trial over the course of his first year, we settled on Rabbit and Kangaroo as protein he could tolerate with the later giving the best results.  Now, I know what your thinking. What a pain in the butt that is and you wouldn’t be wrong. Sometimes it is a bit of a pain when food gets recalled or as is the case this time when your favorite mail order company (Chewy.com) stops selling your food.

It’s been a while since I checked out the choices in Kangaroo food for dogs. Currently, his food is California Natural kangaroo and red lentil.  We had to switch food once before during a recall to Addiction’s Kangaroo formula.  That food, while good quality was not cost effective because it didn’t come in large enough bags for the price they charged.  But it’s great in a pinch.

I did look into getting his food from another supplier, but there seems to be a stock issue in most places, so its time to find another option.

I contacted Chewy about the change in carrying his food and they immediately returned my email and understood my diet dilemma.  They took the time to look into food options for him and noted that they carry Zignature’s Kangaroo Formula.  Being obsessive about Brutus’s diet, I had already looked into other food options and had investigated the Zignature food myself.  The ingredients are high quality and it looks like a great option. The company gets great ratings on dogfoodadvisory.com as well which is a plus. Of course, I didn’t tell them that.  I just appreciated that they took the time to quickly respond and address my needs.

Before making the change, I contacted Brutus vet since changing food can be hard for an allergy dog. We also have to be careful about putting back on all that weight he lost, so we needed to confirm feeding amounts based on the change in kcal per cup and his current weight.

  • A quick reminder to always contact your vet regarding food quantity because the amount on the bag is often too high for your individual dog.
  • Another reminder to change food over the course of 7 days and even more if your dog is extra sensitive to changes in his diet.

With the okay from the vet, we ordered the new food and today we start the rollover.  Right from the start, the food looks better and even smells better so here’s hoping it all goes well.

Til next time!

P.S. If you have never checked out dogfoodadvisor.com you definitely should.  You can compare food brands and get ratings for various brands.  Not all dog food is created equal and some food is downright bad for your pet’s long-term health so choose wisely. You can also sign up for food recall alerts.

I would love to hear about where you get your pet food from.  Take our poll today!
