My dogs are lucky…

Each week Brutus and I scour the petfinder.com web site in search of an adoptable pet of the week.  I hope everyone visits our adoptable pet page to see whose new this week and checks back weekly to see what new friends we may find.
I am reminded of how lucky each of the dogs I have had in my life are.  All shelter dogs and all adopted without having spent too much time in the shelter system.  I look at page after page of adoptable dogs and marvel at how slow our progress in solving the pet overpopulation really is.  Let me give you some example of how humans still continue to fail dogs.

People that are so snobbish that they only believe they should buy from a breeder.  Those who still see mutts as for the low class and think their dogs are an extension of their wealth.

People who still buy from pet stores.  Many of which end up in local shelters.  I have one of these dogs myself.  Xena was a pet store pup who was turned over to a local shelter because the family said she was “bigger” than they thought she would be.  Not sure what size they thought a German Shepherd would be, but at 2 1/2 years old she is only 65 pounds.

The inability of our country to outlaw puppy mills.  Horrible and abusive systems of breeding that have no place in the modern world.

The fact that not all 50 states have spay and neuter laws.

Families that do not research dog breeds before getting a dog to see what would work with their family. This helps so much when looking for a shelter dogs.  Mutts still have personality traits of the breeds they may be mixed with.  Knowing your limitations and what kind of dog would work for you will help you make a successful adoption.

All of these things contribute to the overpopulation of dogs and the overcrowding in our shelters.  All of these things contribute to dogs living their whole lives never having a chance to really be loved by a family. To really bond with a human and to know a world full of countless toys and comfy couches.  To never know silence and the feeling of being content.

Sometimes this world is a disappointment.  People are a disappointment. But I can tell you without any shred of doubt that DOGS are never a disappointment.

Won’t you adopt a dog today?  You will never regret it.

Till next time!
